Book spine width formula in millimetres and inches
Use the same simple formula the calculator uses, then convert units and build the full cover spread.
A practical formula guide for calculating book spine width from formatted page count and paper thickness, with millimetre and inch conversions.
Start with the formatted PDF page count
The page count should come from the final or near-final interior PDF, not the manuscript file. Front matter, blank pages, chapter starts, back matter, and printer-required pages can all change the count.
- Export the interior first when the cover is close to final.
- Use the page count reported by the PDF or print platform.
- Recalculate if layout edits add or remove pages.
Calculate the spine panel
In millimetres, multiply page count by paper thickness per page. To work in inches, either convert the final millimetre result by dividing by 25.4, or use a printer-provided paper thickness already stated in inches.
- Spine width in mm = page count x paper thickness in mm.
- Spine width in inches = spine width in mm / 25.4.
- Use paper thickness from the selected printer when it is available.
Build the cover spread
After the spine is known, add the front cover width, back cover width, spine width, and left and right bleed. Cover height is trim height plus top and bottom bleed.
- Full cover width = trim width + trim width + spine + left bleed + right bleed.
- Full cover height = trim height + top bleed + bottom bleed.
- Do not add bleed to the spine panel itself.
Formula reference
| Calculation | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pages x thickness | Spine panel | 250 x 0.095 mm = 23.75 mm |
| Millimetres / 25.4 | Convert spine to inches | 23.75 mm = 0.94 in |
| 2 x trim width + spine + 2 x bleed | Full cover width | 2 x 152.4 + 23.75 + 6 = 334.55 mm |
| Trim height + 2 x bleed | Full cover height | 228.6 + 6 = 234.6 mm |
Always confirm final cover dimensions with your printer or POD platform.
